Fiberglass vs. Concrete Pool: Which Is Better for Your Backyard?

Fiberglass vs. Concrete Pool: Which Is Better for Your Backyard?

Installation of a new pool is extremely exciting for most homeowners. However, you need to know that there is a huge difference between both – a fiberglass and a concrete pool.

But what? Your first thought must be a classic concrete pool, but you have to think twice when there is a fiberglass swimming pool.

Before making any decision regarding whether you want to get a fiberglass or a concrete pool, it is essential to know about both pools –

Let’s learn about their pros and cons and how they go well in the specific category.

Fiberglass Pool

Texture

If you consider the texture of any pool, fiberglass pools have a smoother finish.

The gel coat finish on the fiberglass pools makes them feel glossy, and the steps or ledges have an anti-slip texture that is extremely smooth.

Construction

Another thing you need to know is that the construction of fiberglass pools is very quick, and they can handle anything.

Fiberglass is a durable material, and most fiberglass pools come with a gel coat finish that prevents any damage.

Longevity

You need to check that the ground is not shifting beneath the structure if you want to protect the fiberglass from cracking.

With proper care and maintenance, the pools can last for 25 to 30 years.

Installation Time

The fiberglass can get ready for swimming in about 2 days. Usually, the patio and decking take about a week or even two.

However, the entire process, from beginning to end, takes about 3-5 weeks.

Less Maintenance

Fiberglass swimming pools need deficient maintenance.

They are resistant to algae growth and do not need resurfacing as compared to concrete pools.

The gel coating on the pools protects them and provides a smoother look and feel. It also makes these pools a lot easier to clean.

Concrete Pool

Installation Time

Did you know that Concrete is among the widely used materials for underwater structures? It takes about 3-6 months to construct a concrete pool, which is mostly done with the gunite process.

However, the process takes an extremely long time, and it takes your breath away every time you look at your torn-up backyard.

Weather Conditions

Also, its durability can handle the elements without even showing many defects.

Concrete can do an extremely good job of handling both the cold weather conditions and the heat without any issues.

Durability

Another thing that makes them extremely popular is their durability. Concrete can survive from external factors for some time without getting damaged.

A concrete pool can last for 50 years, but you need to take proper care after every 10 to 15 years.

Customization

You can customize the concrete pools however you want. Unlike fiberglass inground pools, you can design a concrete pool in the shape you want.

Texture

Concrete pools have a rougher texture, and the plaster surface can hurt you when you walk on it.

The aggregate is sometimes polished to remove the roughness, but it will still not become as soft and smooth as the fiberglass pools.

Lastly

Only you know your priorities for the new pool, so you need to consider these characteristics.

Determine the suitable fit for you and your family.

Maybe you need a pool that fits your lawn aesthetic more than the budget. Or maybe you need the one with lower cost over customization.

If you are still in a dilemma but need a clearer idea of a perfect pool, you need to choose the one while considering all the factors.
